ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that serving Nigeria is the highest honour, urging his son, Seyi Tinubu, and other Nigerian youths to deepen their commitment to public service, patriotism and national development.
The President made the remarks on Monday, October 19, 2026, during a gathering of young supporters under the aegis of the City Boy Movement at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he commended the group for mobilising young Nigerians and supporting his administration’s reform agenda.
Tinubu praised Seyi, the patron of the City Boy Movement, for organising young people, listening to their concerns and engaging them in public affairs without demanding a political title or government office.
In a personal moment during his address, the President disclosed that he had received calls from people asking about the political position his son intended to contest, amid growing speculation about Seyi’s political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I got some calls within the last few weeks asking me what is Seyi running for. He’s running after his father,” Tinubu said, clarifying his remark amid questions about whether his son was preparing to pursue a political office of his own.
The President’s statement presented Seyi’s current activities as an effort to support his father’s political cause rather than an announcement of an independent bid for public office.
Tinubu, however, challenged his son and other young Nigerians to expand their contributions, stressing that public service requires sustained commitment rather than the pursuit of political titles or personal recognition.
“But I will tell you what every father tells his son: you have only started. Do more. Go further. Serve harder. Set an example that your own children, my grandchildren, will be proud to follow,” he said.
He added that the younger generation should recognise the importance of national service and demonstrate through their actions that patriotism goes beyond political mobilisation.
“…to serve your country is the highest honour,” the President declared.
Tinubu also commended the City Boy Movement and other youth support groups for their grassroots engagement and efforts to communicate his administration’s policies to Nigerians.
He acknowledged the challenges associated with the economic reforms introduced by his government, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and currency reforms, while praising supporters who continued to defend the administration despite public criticism and economic pressures.
The President further encouraged young Nigerians to participate lawfully and peacefully in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 elections, urging them to mobilise eligible voters and encourage citizens to obtain and use their Permanent Voter Cards.
The gathering also highlighted the growing role of youth organisations in political communication, grassroots mobilisation and electoral participation, as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.
Tinubu’s message placed renewed emphasis on service, responsibility and youth participation, with his remarks to Seyi underscoring his expectation that young Nigerians should contribute more actively to the country’s future.
For the President, the central message was clear: national service should be regarded not merely as a political opportunity, but as an honour that demands commitment, hard work and responsibility.
