Meta has announced that Will Cathcart is stepping down as the head of WhatsApp after seven (7) years leading the world’s largest messaging application, marking a major leadership transition within the technology giant.
The announcement was made by Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who praised Cathcart’s leadership and contributions to the growth of WhatsApp, which has expanded to more than three billion users globally during his tenure.
“Will has been one of Meta’s most important and effective leaders, helping to bring WhatsApp to over three billion people and championing privacy for our community,” Zuckerberg said.
According to Meta, Cathcart will remain within the company and assume a new role focused on developing new products and technologies.
Cathcart joined the leadership of WhatsApp in 2019 and played a significant role in advancing the platform’s privacy features, business services and global expansion.
Under his stewardship, WhatsApp strengthened its end-to-end encryption framework and expanded its presence among both consumers and businesses worldwide.
In the same announcement, Meta disclosed that Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech company CRED, will become the next head of WhatsApp.
Zuckerberg described Shah as a technology builder with a global outlook capable of leading the messaging platform into its next phase of growth.
“Kunal built CRED into one of India’s most important technology companies, and he brings the kind of builder mentality and global perspective that will serve him well in running the world’s biggest messaging app,” Zuckerberg said.
The leadership change comes at a time when WhatsApp continues to expand its business offerings, artificial intelligence capabilities and digital communication services across global markets.
Industry observers believe the transition could shape the future direction of the platform, particularly in areas including business messaging, digital payments and AI-powered communication tools.
With more than three billion users worldwide, WhatsApp remains the largest messaging platform globally, serving individuals, businesses and organizations across numerous countries.
Cathcart’s transition and Shah’s appointment signal a new chapter for the Meta-owned application as it seeks to maintain its position in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.
