A 30-year hunt for justice ends with the sentencing of Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, who has written about his role in Shakur’s shooting death.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 killing of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur.
Davis, 63, was convicted of first-degree murder in August 2026 following a trial in Las Vegas, United States.
Tupac was shot in a drive-by attack on September 7, 1996, and died six days later at the age of 25.
Tuesday sentencing capped a 30-year-long cold case that rattled the golden era of rap music in the United States.
In August, Duane “Keffe D’ Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crops, had been found guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon.
Davis is the sole person charged in the death of Shakur who died at the peak of his fame.
Judge Carli Kierny announced Davis’s sentence at a hearing in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she chided him for the murder.
“You don’t get to take a man from his family, you don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him and just walk away from it, especially when the man is Tupac Shakur”
“The world never forgot about him and his death, and neither did Las Vegas” Kierny said.
In a tearful testimony before Judge Carli Kierny, Shakur’s younger sister Sekyiwa Shakur said their mother had raised him to because human rights activist and treated him as he had the potential to change the world. “He believed her”, said Sekyiwa Shakur, wearing a black shirt. “He went out in the world to do that. And I believe he would have done it”
Until Davis’ 2023 arrest, the killing of Shakur, shot dead in the passenger seat of an SUV driven by his record executive, Marion “Suge” Knight, had stood for nearly three decades as one of America’s most notorious cold cases.
The murder which silenced one rap’s most commercially successful and influential artists, heightened the image of violence permeating 1990 hip-hop culture while stoking the infamous East Coast -West Coast “gangsta” rap feud of the era.
Despite Davis conviction, the question of who pulled the trigger in the fatal shooting of the 25-year-old rap legend has never been conclusively decided.
Davis was tried and convicted for masterminding the murder to avenge the beating of his nephew by Shakur and members of the rapper’s entourage inside the MGM Grand casino on the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996.
Davis has said he would appeal his conviction. Authorities said they long believed Davis was involved in Shakur’s killing but lacked sufficient evidence to charge him. I
n his book, “Compton Street Legend”, Davis himself wrote that he was considered a suspect in the murders of both Shakur and Christopher Wallace, a rival rapper.
