There have been calls for a posthumous National award on a 3rd Republic Senator, Late Distinguished Alhaji Umar Nnani Maduagwu MSc, M. ENG, SME-AIME, SPE AIME-1945-2001.
The family of Distinguished Senator Alhaji Umar Nnani Maduagwu MSc, M. ENG, SME-AIME, SPE AIME who served in the 3rd republic under the defunct NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONVENTION (NRC) is calling on the federal government of Nigeria and the Imo state governor His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodinma to facilitate this kind gesture which previous administrations have ignored.
9News Nigeria investigative team led by Princely Onyenwe has gone deep to Unveil the great archive of such a wonderful personality who has served in various capacities to improve the old Imo state and Nigeria at large.
From our ENQUIRIES, He Maduagwu was born in Oguta local government area of Imo state Nigeria in the year 14th February 1945 and passed unto glory on 1st December 2001.
However he was and still remains the only Igbo Muslim Senator of note, as he was the first of his kind (Muslim) to be elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a predominantly Christian State as our dear Imo, during the 3rd republic, under the defunct NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONVENTION (NRC).
It must be noted that the late Sage, Senator U. N. Maduagwu was the first Imo Citizen ever with required academic prerequisite (a first class master degree holder in UNDERGROUND/METALLURGICAL MINING of mineral deposits from a foremost University in the world) to champion the course of the lost “IMO STATE OIL WELLS” and its recovery from RIVERS STATE in the year 1999 during the Gov. Achike Udenwa led regime.
He also singlehandedly did the FEASIBILITY STUDY for the DREDGING, DESILTING and CANALIZATION of the Oguta Lake down to the Atlantic Ocean in 1979, which was solely relied upon by the Federal Ministry of Transport in designating Oguta as Port (Verified).
The Osse-motor Naval base was a brainchild of Maduagwu and his pioneer Oguta Community Development Union (OCDU) Executives who leveraged on an event (Navy Annual Convention) anchored in the late 80’s by the Chief of Naval Staff and his team at the now moribund Oguta Lake Motels Ltd to bring it to fruition.
Maduagwu was also the first Igbo Man (SENATOR) who saw the brazen flaws inherent in the 1999 Nigerian constitution and had the temerity to openly clamor for its review at a leadership meeting summoned by the late iconic Dr. Alex Ekwueme to chart a new course for the Igbos in Enugu in 1998.
Recall that Senator Maduagwu was and still remains the only Igbo Muslim Senator of note, as he was the first of his kind (Muslim) to be elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a predominantly Christian State as our dear Imo, during the 3rd republic, under the defunct NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONVENTION (NRC).
During his ephemeral reign in the 3rd Republic Senate, Maduagwu made a case for a Petrochemical Plant to be built in Orlu Senatorial Zone being the largest Oil Producing Senatorial zone comprising Twelve Local Government Areas.
He also pushed for an industrial project for Imo State, a Gas Refinery to be precise using the State’s abundant gas reserves in Oguta as raw material.
His role in the annulled JUNE 12TH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION cannot also be swept under the carpet as evidenced in a personal letter written to him by the Famous Chief M. K. O. Abiola asking for his support, as well as his role in the first Maiden Governorship Election in Ebonyi State and support for Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
It is therefore not in doubt that the late iconic Senator played a major role in situating IMO STATE among the comity of States in National limelight, and no doubts deserve every honor accruable to him.
Not honoring a Man with such credentials/antecedents could incure the wrath of God on its perpetrators and in essence, the people.

(14th February 1945 – 1st December 2001) is due for a national recognition and state posthumous honours.
