As millions around the world marked Father’s Day, renewed attention has been drawn to the critical role fathers play in building families, shaping values and strengthening nations.
The annual celebration, observed in many countries, has become more than a day of gifts and tributes. It has also sparked conversations about the sacrifices, leadership and responsibilities of fathers in an era marked by economic hardship, social pressures and changing family structures.
Globally, observers say responsible fathers remain at the center of stable homes and strong communities, providing guidance, discipline and support that often influence future generations.
Speaking on the significance of the occasion, media practitioner and journalist Princely Onyenwe noted that fathers continue to serve as silent nation builders whose contributions frequently go unnoticed despite their impact on society.
According to him, fathers are expected not only to provide for their families but also to contribute positively to society through mentorship, support for the less privileged, youth empowerment and community development initiatives.
He cited few Biblical teachings highlighted during the reflection which included the following: Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it,” while Proverbs 20:7 says, “The righteous who walks in his integrity—blessed are his children after him.”. Psalms 128 & 1 vs 1-3 was also quoted.
Onyenwe further warned against fathers embracing corruption, greed, bad governance, social injustice and other practices capable of undermining family values and national development.
Celebrants who spoke to 9News Nigeria from different locations believe that nations seeking sustainable growth must pay greater attention to family institutions, especially responsible fatherhood, which many describe as the foundation of strong societies.
“As fathers build strong families, they equally build responsible citizens, and responsible citizens build stronger nations,” Princely Onyenwe stated.
As Father’s Day celebrations continue globally, many have called for greater support, recognition and encouragement for fathers who continue to make sacrifices for their families and communities.
The global activist, Onyenwe concluded that honouring fathers means honouring the men whose leadership, integrity, unwavering dedication and sacrifices help shape future generations and contribute to national development.
He called on fathers, guardians and father figures all over the globe to engage more in strengthening societies, helping governments and building solid nations across the world.
