Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has endorsed the proposal of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to introduce the death penalty by firing squad for convicted kidnappers and bandits.
Speakibg during the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign flag-off for the Edo North Senatorial District Local Government elections, Oshiomhole insisted that states have the constitutional authority to enact laws prescribing punishments for offences committed within their jurisdictions.
The former Edo State Governor argue that only criminals and those involved in violent crimes should be worried about the proposed legislation, stressing that decisive measures are needed to address the rising cases of kidnapping and banditry across the state and country.
According to him, the proposed laws is aimed at protecting innocent citizens and restoring confidence on the government’s ability to guarantee security.
Oshiomhole also reaffirmed his support for the establishment of state police, maintaining that decentralized policing would complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force on tackling insecurity more effectively.
He noted that the state police would enable local authorities to respond swiftly to security threats and better understand the unique challenges facing their communities.
Govermor Monday Okpebholo, who also addressed party supporters at the event, defended the proposed legislation, describing it as part of his administration’s broader strategy to strengthen security and safeguard residents from violent crimes.
The governor said his administration remains committed to implemening policies that will deter criminal activities and ensure the safety of lives and property across Edo State.
The proposal has continued to generate reactions from different quarters, with supportters describing it as a strong deterrent against kidnapping and banditry, while critics are expected to raise concerns over its implications and implementation.
