The Plateau State Police Command has warned its officers against unlawfully demanding or searching the mobile phones of citizens without following due legal process.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Bassey Ewah, issued the directive while addressing police personnel in Jos. He stressed that officers must respect the constitutional rights of Nigerians and carry out their duties within the confines of the law.
According to the Commissioner, searching a citizen’s mobile phone without a lawful warrant or other legal justification is a violation of fundamental rights and will not be tolerated by the command. He urged officers to maintain professionalism, uphold discipline, and avoid actions capable of eroding public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
Ewah further reminded personnel that policing must be guided by the rule of law, respect for human rights, and accountability, emphasizing that any officer found engaging in unlawful phone searches or other forms of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary action.
The directive forms part of ongoing efforts by the Plateau State Police Command to promote professionalism, improve police-community relations, and ensure officers comply with established legal and ethical standards while carrying out their responsibilities.
