Shiite Movement Announces Nationwide Processions, Reaffirms Stand for Justice

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as the Shiite movement and led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, has announced plans to hold nationwide Ashura processions on Friday, June 26, 2026.

The annual religious event, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad, will be observed across more than 600 towns and villages in over 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In a statement released by the group’s Media Forum and signed by Ammar Muhammad-Rajab, the movement described Ashura as a reminder of the values of justice, truth, sacrifice and resistance against oppression.

The group explained that this year’s procession was scheduled for Friday, Muharram 11, 1448 AH, to coincide with commemorations taking place in Karbala, Iraq, where Imam Husain and his companions were killed in 680 AD.

It added that while the public procession would hold on Friday, other Ashura religious observances could still take place on Thursday, the 10th day of Muharram.

The movement said the tragedy of Karbala remains a major event in Islamic history, with Imam Husain’s sacrifice continuing to inspire people to defend justice and oppose tyranny.

According to the statement, the processions represent a demonstration of loyalty to Imam Husain’s ideals and a rejection of oppression in all forms.

The group said Ashura should not only be seen as a period of mourning but also as a call for courage, moral responsibility and commitment to standing for truth.

The Islamic Movement added that it would continue the annual observance across Nigeria as part of efforts to preserve Imam Husain’s legacy and promote the principles of justice and sacrifice.

The statement quoted former Iranian leader Imam Ruhollah Khomeini as saying, “Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala,” highlighting the movement’s belief in the continued relevance of the event.

Ashura is observed by millions of Muslims worldwide, particularly followers of the Shia tradition, in remembrance of Imam Husain’s death at the Battle of Karbala.

In Nigeria, the IMN has organised Ashura commemorations for decades, with thousands of followers participating in processions featuring banners and messages centred on justice, sacrifice and remembrance.

The group maintained that its activities are peaceful religious gatherings, despite past disagreements with security agencies over public processions.
