Zohran Mamdani has been sworn in as the mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim to lead America’s largest city, after talking oath just after midnight at a historic decommissioned subway station beneath Manhattan.

Placing his hand on the Holy Qur’an, the 34-year-old Democrat described the moment as the honour of a lifetime, with the oath administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James at the old City Hall subway station, a landmark symbolizing the city’s public transit legacy.
Born in Kampala, Uganda and raised in New York from age seven, Mamdani is also the city’s youngest mayor in generations, its first mayor of South Asia decent and African-born leader, assuming office with reform agenda focused on affordability amid lingering economic pressures.
