As some cluster of Nigerians gather in various locations to reflect on the massacre of several hundred of Nigerian sent to their early grave by the country security agencies during the #EndSARS protest of October 20, 2020, the former Governor of Cross River State HE. Donald Duke took to his Official Facebook page monitored by 9NEWS NIGERIA to remind the Federal Government of Nigeria, all elected and appointed public officers to provide good governance for the existing generation of young Nigerians and those unborn.

Duke whose administration between 1999 – 2007 knew no public outcry or the masses revolt such as was witnessed in Cross River State when the State government hid the FG palliatives meant for the people, said the EndSARS protest was and opportunity for our leaders to reflect on what went wrong and resolve to serve and protect citizens as they were elected to do.

Appealing on government at all levels to look at the merits and demerit of the #EndSARS protest Duke wrote:

“20/10/2020 #EndSars symbolizes the day the Nigerian youth united as one to make their voices heard and not only ask for an end to police brutality but also to demand good governance from our leaders”.

“It symbolizes a day when they took ownership of the future of the country and made all their concerns and grievances known, yet the question of if we have failed our youth begs to be answered”.

“The ownership of the country belongs to all of us and even our unborn generations, we as leaders today are merely custodians of the country and we owe the generations coming after us a good legacy which they can build on”.

“The carnage that happened as a result of the attack on the protesters by security agencies remains a very sore point and it should serve as a lesson to government on how not to respond to the grievances of Nigerians”.

“As we remember the sad event of a year ago today, it serves as an opportunity for our leaders to reflect on what went wrong and resolve to serve and protect the Nigerian people as they were elected to do”.

Donald Duke
