CLIMATE CHANGE LAW; Igwe Ogbonnaya applauds President Buhari.

A climate change and good governance crusader, Igwe Ogbonnaya has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the climate change bill into law, describing the move as bold, courageous and progressive.

Amb. Igwe Ogbonnaya in a statement commended the Senate and the House of Representatives for considering the Bill as priority resulting in its passage and eventual signing into law by Mr. President.

The Climate Change Act owes its origin origin to a bill sponsored by a member of the House of Representatives, Sam Onuigbo and provides for, among other things the mainstreaming of climate change actions and the establishment of the National Council on Climate Change.

Igwe noted that the climate change law paves way for environmental and economic accounting and tends to advocate for a net zero emission deadline plan in the country. He stated that in furtherance to its projection for sustainable development anchored on climate and biodiversity responsibilities, the Law in Section 29 provides for the development of natural capital accounts by the National Bureau of Statistics and the use of the data from the accounts in making National Development Plans.

Recall that the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, read for the second and third times, the Climate Change Bill, and passed it. The Bill had earlier been passed by the House of Representatives on July 8, 2021.
