The Government of Bayelsa State is taking proactive measures to minimize the negative impact of flooding on its residents. To achieve this, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has instructed the State Ministry of Environment and Sanitation Authority to begin extensive preparations immediately. This directive was given during the 138th State Executive Council meeting chaired by Senator Ewhrudjakpo at the Executive Chambers of the Government House in Yenagoa on Wednesday.

According to a statement signed by Mr. Doubara Atasi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) has predicted significant flooding in several states, including Bayelsa State.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo emphasized that Bayelsa serves as a drainage point for water from the River Niger and River Benue, which eventually empties into the Atlantic Ocean. He urged the ministry to thoroughly clear and open up all natural water canals to ensure the free flow of water.

The Deputy Governor also advised residents to stay vigilant and avoid indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drainages and other water channels to prevent potential flood emergencies. He stressed the importance of proactive measures and prevention, stating that prevention is more cost-effective than curing the aftermath of flooding.

In conclusion, the Deputy Governor directed the Ministry of Environment to work with the state Environmental Sanitation Authority to ensure regular clearing of drainages as part of the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.
