On October 16, 2024, Mr. Abiodun Kayode, Mr. James Emmanuel, and Mr. Oni Philip were formally charged in court. The charges against them include criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, stemming from their involvement in the tragic death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student at Kwara State Polytechnic. The officers are currently in custody as they await further court proceedings.
This action follows an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Qoyum Ishola, who was fatally injured at a police checkpoint on September 4, 2024. Reports indicate that Ishola suffered a ruptured vein and subsequently died from blood loss at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital the following day. His death sparked significant protests from students demanding accountability and a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Kwara State Police Command has taken these allegations seriously, leading to the dismissal of the officers involved. They were found guilty of various misconducts, including leaving their assigned posts and engaging in corrupt practices.
