This wave of crime has been exacerbated by a growing belief among the youth in quick wealth through diabolical means, diverging from the industrious legacy the South Easterners are known for.
The phenomenon of “Okite” and the practices promoted by self-proclaimed native doctors and “Eze Nwanyi” have lured many young individuals into the dark world of money rituals. These misguided youths, seeking rapid financial gains, have resorted to heinous acts, including murder and the harvesting of human organs, under the illusion that such rituals would grant them wealth. The so-called “Omenana” trend has further perpetuated these atrocities, creating an atmosphere of terror and insecurity across the state.
Compounding these issues are the “unknown gunmen” who exploit the dense forests surrounding Anambra’s villages as hideouts, launching attacks that result in bloodshed and heightened anxiety among the populace. The collaboration between these criminals and fraudulent traditional practitioners has deepened the state’s crisis, making movement perilous and disrupting the social fabric.
In response to this escalating crisis, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has initiated a series of decisive measures aimed at restoring peace and security to Anambra State. Central to his strategy is the establishment of the “Agunechemba” Anambra Security Outfit, a specialized force tasked with combating the myriad security challenges plaguing the state. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to reclaiming Anambra from the grip of criminal elements and restoring public confidence.
