Nigeria is gearing up to host the first African Boxing Congress and a Boxing Gala Night in Lagos on Sunday, 28 December 2025.
The event is expected to draw officials from more than twenty national federations across the continent, setting the stage for what many within the sport see as a major step forward for African boxing.
The Nigeria Boxing Federation, led by Honourable Wale Edun, secured the rights after African Boxing gave the green light. African Boxing functions as the continent’s boxing authority and operates under World Boxing, the international body responsible for Olympic-style boxing.
In a letter addressed to the NBF, African Boxing described Nigeria as “a strategic nation with the capacity to lead a holistic advancement of the squared ropes sports in the continent.”
The message also confirmed the inclusion of the NBF Vice President, Hon Omonlei Imadu, in the African Boxing Working Committee. He will also take charge as Head of Organisation for the December congress.
Imadu expressed delight at the appointment and the opportunity the event presents.
“As a federation, we would do all in our power to host a successful event in December. As the head of the organisation, I am particularly excited at the prospect of having the congress in Nigeria because it’s one that will position both the NBF and our nation as a central point for the highest boxing decision-making body on the continent,” he said.
Nigeria’s successful bid places the country in a strong position to be chosen as the host of the African qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. It also opens doors for developmental programmes aimed at boosting Olympic-style boxing in Nigeria.
In a further vote of confidence, African Boxing has revealed that its continental headquarters will be established in Lagos.
