Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has been elected the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), becoming only the second woman to lead the country’s foremost legal body in its history.
Bodejo-Okunsanya secured victory in the NBA national officers’s election after polling 12, 37 votes to defeat two fellow Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Lateef Akangbe, and Olumuyiwa Akinboro.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Chief Aham Ejelam, SAN, announced the results on Sunday at the NBA National Secretariat, Abuja.
She was declared winner of the election held between July 18 and 19, 2026, by the Chairman, Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Aham Ejalam, SAN, on Sunday morning few hours after the end of the polls and collation of results.
Badejo-Okusanya, according to the ECNBA, secured 12,317 (47.18 of total votes cast for the position of president) to emerge winner, while her closest rival, Mr. Lateef Akangbe, SAN, polled 7,934 (30.39%) votes, and the consensus candidate of the Omo Egbe Amofin O’dua Are Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, polled 5,855 22,43%) votes to come third.
According to the results, while 26,184 voted in the entire election, 26106 voted for the presidential candidates out of a total of 82,172 voters.
Also elected was Mr. Afam Okeke,who emerged as the Association’s General Secretary after polling 8,478 votes to defeat his opponents.
Bodejo-Okunsanya will serve a two-year tenure from 2026 to 2028, succeeding Afam Osigwe, SAN. Her election marks a significant milestone for association, making her the first woman to lead the NBA in more than three decades after Dame Priscilla Kuye, a notable Nigerian lawyer who served as the president between 1991 and 1992.
