Access Bank customers loss: See the e-mail that puts the bank into trouble

Due to an inaction of Access Bank some previous months ago, remittances of stamp duty were not harvested in piecemeal of N50 (fifty Naira) from customers respective transactions above N10,000 (ten thousand Naira) and paid to the Central Bank of Nigeria – CBN in obeisance of the regulatory bank standing order.

Having accumulated months of none remittance from February to April 2020 on customers’ transactions, Access Bank on Tuesday 23rd June 2020 sent an email to all its customers informing them of their intention to deduct the accumulated “Stamp Duty”

The mail obtained by 9News Nigeria reads:

“IMPORTANT UPDATE ON STAMP DUTY CHARGE

Dear customer,

You may recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) mandated a charge of N50 as stamp duty on all credits received into current and savings accounts. This is in respect of deposit and electronic transfer into all Naira denomination account for transactions value of N10,000 and above.

We recently discovered that the charges on applicable transactions carried out between February 1, 2020 and April 30, 2020 were inadvertently not passed on your account.

We sincerely apologize for this.

However, in compliance with the CBN mandate, we will be required to process the accumulated charges for the said period on your account for remittance to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

We request that you kindly fund your account to accommodate this charge.

Once again, we express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience

Thank you for choosing Access Bank”. Unquote

This notification has earned the bank knocks and threats of closing their account from customers all over Nigeria.

The social media space is flooded with unpleasant comment and remarks that may lead customer to leave the bank in drove.

While some customers are calling for others to mobilize for protest at the premises of all Access Bank branches in Nigeria on Monday 29th June 2020, others said they won’t participate in the protest but will stop banking with Access
