It started like a rumour, and we in 9news Nigeria reported it as a filler report. Goodluck Jonathan as the Northern choice for 2023. Presidency. When Northern youths first flew the kite , frankly I dismissed the permutation.
But today that subtle testing of water is really pointing at a very interesting episode in Nigerian Presidential schemings. Former president Jonathan to be drafted into the ring under APC which truncated his second term victory in 2015 as preferred candidate of the North.
Why Jonathan? The answer is neither here nor there . The simple truth is that Nigerian politics is neither ideology nor policy or development specific . What plays out is simply power . All the schemings are simply a means to that end. And in the case of the North maintaining or deciding who if being ‘sub-letted’ the power serves their interest.
It is from this premises that in the North-South power pendulum which swings to the South in 2023, the North sees Jonathan as the person with experience, charisma, northern sympathy and ‘goodluck’ to win from any party. He has all the credentials and attributes of a beautiful bride to be wooed .
The latest is a statement by Tanko Yakasai , chairman of Northern Elders Council that Jonathan be allowed to claim second term for the South- South after Buhari’s North -East 8 years. Simple logic. Obasanjo did 8 years for South-West.
If this speculation works out, the South- East trying to dump all its eggs in the APC basket may have to wait a little longer.
