The Delta State Police Command has demoted two of its officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The disciplinary action followed the circulation of a viral video showing the officers allegedly using a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine to collect money from a motorist, an incident that sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation.
The affected officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, are attached to C Division, Asaba.
According to police authorities, the Commissioner of Police ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Following the completion of the orderly room trial, both officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful orders, extortion, and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020 (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria).
As part of the disciplinary measures, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah was demoted to the rank of Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was reduced to the rank of Constable.
The Delta State Police Command said the sanctions demonstrate its commitment to professionalism, discipline, accountability, and zero tolerance for corruption within the Force.
The Command reaffirmed that any officer found engaging in misconduct, extortion, or any act capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law.
The Police also urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of misconduct by officers, assuring residents that all complaints will be thoroughly investigated and that officers found culpable will be sanctioned.
9NEWS NIGERIA reports that the disciplinary action comes amid sustained efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to improve public confidence, strengthen accountability, and uphold ethical policing across the country.
