The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has raised concerns over the bail conditions attached to the ongoing legal case involving former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing the requirements as unusually demanding.
Speaking with journalists after an event, Sanusi said the conditions reportedly placed on El-Rufai’s release were difficult to meet, alleging that the authorities required high-profile individuals, including an emir and a senior government official, to stand as sureties.
The former Central Bank of Nigeria governor said the situation involving El-Rufai had raised questions about the fairness and difficulty of the bail process.
“Look at what is happening with my brother, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai. He is currently in custody, and the requirements for his release are incredibly difficult,” Sanusi stated.
El-Rufai has remained in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February over allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office during his time as Kaduna governor.
He was later brought before a Kaduna High Court on amended charges bordering on alleged fraud.
Meanwhile, the El-Rufai Support Group Association has engaged a Washington DC-based advocacy organisation, Vanguard Africa, to raise international awareness over the former governor’s prosecution.
Beyond the legal issues surrounding El-Rufai, Sanusi also spoke about challenges facing northern Nigeria, highlighting concerns over cultural changes, declining social values and the region’s reduced political influence.
He argued that while poverty has historically affected the North, newer challenges include a loss of traditional values and increasing external influences.
Sanusi’s remarks have added to ongoing debates over El-Rufai’s case and broader conversations about governance, justice and the future of northern Nigeria.
