Protesting teachers on Thursday caused chaos at Mexico City’s international airport, one of the busiest in Latin America, with thousands of demonstrators blocking roads leading to terminals.
Travelers were forced to abandon their taxis and walk with luggage to avoid missing their flights.
The demonstration, which lasted several hours, caused tempers to flare between motorists and protesters opposed to pension reforms.
“We were already running late, and this delayed us even more,” 27-year-old Colombian Fabio Lorens told AFP, dragging his luggage under the sun.
Benito Juarez International Airport is the largest in Mexico and one of the most trafficked in Latin America, handling 45.3 million passengers in 2024.
The teachers have also set up hundreds of tents in the Zocalo, Mexico City’s main public square, demanding the repeal of a reform to the pension system.
