US President Donald Trump has said any Iranian funds released through sanctions relief will be placed in a US-controlled escrow account and used only to buy food and medical supplies from American suppliers.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, said the funds would be managed by Washington and allocated for the purchase of items such as corn, wheat and soybeans from US farmers.
He described the move as a response to what he called a humanitarian crisis, saying the assistance was needed immediately to support the Iranian population.
The announcement comes as Washington and Tehran continue talks on key issues following a deal aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Under the agreement, Iran is expected to receive some level of sanctions relief, including the possible unfreezing of previously restricted assets.
The US Treasury Department on Monday announced a temporary easing of sanctions on Iran, allowing the country to produce, sell and transport crude oil and related products until August 21 as negotiations continue.
The discussions are also focused on securing a long-term agreement over Iran’s nuclear programme and preventing further escalation in the region.
