The registrar of Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, Mr. Benjamin Joffa has ordered for the immediate suspension of all academic activities in the institution with immediate effect.
The decision is sequel to continuous protests by students who want the Governing Council of the school to reverse itself on its planned enforcement of uniforms which they want all students to wear compulsorily.
Students started the protest peacefully on Monday, matching round the NDU campus at Amassoma and continued to do same on Tuesday carrying placards demanding for the reversal of the policy and the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo who is on his second term in office.
The students described Edoumiekumo’s policy of uniform wearing for students in tertiary institution as strange, ridiculous and a mockery of their academic attainment that level.
But 9NEWS NIGERIA was told NDU came up with the plan to stop the rise of indecent dressing from students on campus and female students in particular.
While students had concluded that the school has already fixed the price for the uniform at N30,000 for Engineering, and N20,000 for students in any other faculty, the Public Relations Officer of the school Idoni Ingezi denied that the institution has not yet fixed fees for uniforms, but affirmed that discussions were still ongoing at departmental levels.
