Economic Freedom Fighters MPs have been suspended from Parliament after they were forcibly removed from the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The MPs have been suspended for five working days.

The EFF caucus was forcibly removed from the chambers after the party objected to President Jacob Zuma’s appearance for the debate on the Presidency’s budget.

The matter degenerated into a shouting match between the MPs and National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete when she asked Mbuyiseni Ndlozi to leave the chambers.

When Ndlozi refused to leave, Mbete then called in the public order police to remove the EFF MPs.

Following their removal, Mbete wrote to the party and informed them of their suspension.

“In terms of the Rule 53A (A), you are automatically suspended for the period applicable, as provided for Rule 54,” Mbete was quoted as saying by News24.

“You may not enter the precincts of Parliament for the duration of your suspension,” it read.

EFF chief whip, Floyd Shivambu, said that the party will launch criminal proceedings against Mbete and the public order police over the incident.

  1. Every parliament will have dispute, argument and disagreement but what matters is how amicably these issues are being resolved with respect and dignity.

  2. The EFF need to use the time in Parliament wisely. Continuously disrupting it is not the answer. As much as I can’t abide the ANC, the EFF need to compose themselves and become productive in politics instead of militant – instead of learning and being part of parliament they act like children and this isn’t productive for the Entire country
