Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has defied significant legal and security obstacles and ensured the state’s local government elections proceeded as planned.

The elections, held on October 5, faced uncertainty when a Federal High Court ruling suspended the release of the voter register and ordered police not to provide security for the polls.

Tensions escalated when the Nigerian Police Force, under instructions from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), withdrew officers assigned to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

According to reports, there were even attempts by some officers to take control of the RSIEC facility and cart away sensitive election materials.

However, Governor Fubara, alerted to the situation, swiftly intervened, leading a group of government officials to the scene to prevent the materials from being taken.

Fubara, visibly upset with the police interference, declared his determination to continue with the elections without the police presence.

“We don’t need your security,” the governor boldly stated, insisting that the court ruling cannot prevent the elections from taking place.

He further emphasized his commitment to the local area democratic process, stating that only an act of violence against him could halt the election.

In a bid to ensure the polls go ahead smoothly, Fubara arranged for alternative security measures and declared public holidays to facilitate the voting process, demonstrating his resolve to push forward despite mounting challenges.
