The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has raised alarm over the growing hunger crisis affecting millions of Nigerians, calling for urgent and practical government intervention to address the nation’s food insecurity.
Speaking on the escalating cost of living and dwindling access to affordable food during plenary on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, Akpabio warned that hunger cannot be defeated through rhetoric alone but requires deliberate policy direction, diligent budgeting and strong political will.
“Hunger cannot be defeated with words. Hunger requires policy direction, diligent budgeting, and willpower to defeat it,” the Senate President stated.
He noted that recent reports indicate that over 33 million Nigerians are at risk of acute hunger due to rising food prices, insecurity, and the impact of climate change.
The Senate President emphasized the need for a coordinated national response that prioritizes food production, storage and equitable distribution, urging both federal and state governments to channel more resources toward agriculture and nutrition programs.
