A branch manager of Polaris Bank has been shot dead by suspected kidnappers on the campus of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State.
The banker, identified simply as Mr Ossy, was reportedly attacked on Sunday evening while taking his children to the university, where they are students.
Two female students were also reportedly abducted during the incident, according to the management of FUTO.
The development has raised fresh concerns over security around the university and its host communities, with the institution subsequently engaging the Imo State Police Command over the incident.
FUTO confirmed that a visitor to the university was fatally shot during the attack on Sunday, September 6.
In a statement signed by the university Registrar, Chinonso Uba, the institution said two female students were also abducted by the attackers.
The university said security agencies were investigating the incident and that it was working with the authorities to secure the safe recovery of the abducted students.
Bank confirms manager’s death
Polaris Bank also confirmed the death of its branch manager, expressing condolences to his family, colleagues and other loved ones.
The bank said the incident occurred when the banker was accosted by hoodlums while taking his children to the university.
According to the bank, the children managed to escape from the scene, but the manager was killed.
The bank said it was relying on the relevant law enforcement agencies to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
It also appealed to members of the public to allow the authorities to complete their investigation.
FUTO seeks stronger security
Following the attack, FUTO management met with Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, on Monday to discuss the security situation around the institution and neighbouring communities.
The police commissioner reportedly assured the university of increased security around the campus and surrounding areas.
The areas identified for intensified security include Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.
The university management also urged students and members of the wider campus community to remain calm and vigilant and to report suspicious activities promptly.
Students’ abduction under investigation
The circumstances surrounding the reported abduction of the two female students remain under investigation.
FUTO said it was engaging the relevant authorities regarding efforts to secure their safe recovery.
The incident has also triggered concern among students and members of the university community, particularly over security around the campus and its surrounding areas.
A proposed student protest over the killing was reportedly cancelled after the university management reiterated its existing ban on unruly and rowdy gatherings on campus.
The university warned students against activities that could disrupt peace or compromise the safety of the institution and surrounding communities.
As of the time of the report, the police had not announced any arrest in connection with the killing and reported abduction.
