Boko Haram: Shehu Sani reacts to alleged fraudulent activities by INGOs in Borno

The former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, has reacted to the alleged fraudulent activities by the International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) operating in Borno State, saying there is a substance of truth in the allegations.

The former law maker, who doubles as a human rights activist bared his mind via his verified Twitter handle today, Saturday.

He said, “There is substance to the allegations made by Borno Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum over the fraudulent and dubious activities of International NGOs, exploiting and profiteering from the plight of the state and its people.
“There is a humanitarian industry in Borno State.”

Recall that Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, had during the weekend categorically made it clear to NGOs operating in the state that, they must allow the state government to take the lead, monitor and supervise all their activities or risk been shown way out of the state.

The governor stated this when he received in audience the Leader of European Union, Mr. Laban Onismas who led other developmental partners such as Plan International, UNilICEF, Save the Children among others.

During the visit, Prof. Zulum said, “I have made it clear to them that any Humanitarian Organization that is operating in Borno, must allow the State Government to take the lead, monitor and supervise all activities.

“My sad experience was with Mercy Corps and NRC, I reviewed their activities, after validation, I observed that Norwegian Refugees Council (NRC) claimed and reported that it has drilled 150 boreholes in Jere Local Government alone, which was far from the truth, while Mercy Corps, which claimed to have constructed 350 houses in Gwoza as reported was untrue, as it was only one house that was erected by the organization in Gwoza alone.

“We will surely look into the aforesaid and act for the betterment of our dear people”.
