A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed Friday May 8, 2026 for hearing of a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The case, which is before Justice Peter Lifu, is challenging Jonathan’s eligibility to participate in the 2027 presidential race. At the last sitting on April 28, the Judge ordered that hearing notices be issued and properly served on all defendants in the matter.
However, the defendants are yet to file their responses in court.
The matter is expected to be heard on the newly fixed date as legal arguments over Jonathan’s eligibility continue.
The suit was filled by lawyer Jonnmary Jideobi, who asked the court to declare Jonathan ineligible to run for president again under the Nigerian Constitution.
Jideobi also sought an order restraining Jonathan from joining any political party as a presidential candidate and stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing his name for election.
Jonathan, INEC, and the Attorney-General of the Federation were listed as defendants in the suit.
According to the suit, Jonathan had already completed the remaining tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua after he died in 2010 and later won another full term in 2011.
