Authorities in Kenya have arrested a man, Collins Letting, for establishing and running illegal police station in Chebarus, Uasin Gishi County.

The facility, which operated for six months, was fully equipped with detention cells and an office and was painted official Police colours and logos to mimic a legitimate station.

Letting’s self-proclaimed police unit primarily targeted individuals transporting unlicensed timber from Cengalo Forest.

His activities went unnoticed by local authorities, including the area chief, raising concerns about the oversight of security operations in the region.

Police officers discovered the unauthorized facility on March 8 and reported the matter to Kamiyu Police Post.

“We were surprised to find a fully set-up facility painted in police colours, yet no authorization had been granted for such an establishment in this area; a Police report stated.

Under Kenya’s National Police Service Act of 2014, only the Inspector-General of Police has the legal authority to establish Police Stations and Patrol Bases.

Letting’s arrest has sparked discussions about how such an operation could go undetected for half a year and the potential implications for law enforcement credibility in the area.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the charges Letting will face, but the case has drawn public attention, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring of security structures within local communities.
