Lieutenant General Walid Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army, has stressed that tackling the ongoing insecurity in Plateau State is vital to the peace and overall stability of Nigeria.
Shaibu made the remarks during a strategic operational visit to the Headquarters of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos on Monday, where he met with officers and troops engaged in security operations across the Middle Belt.
Strategic importance of Plateau Operations According to the COAS, the security challenge in Plateau State are unique and multifaceted, requiring disciplined, coordinated military engagement to restore lasting peace.
He described the troops role as “critical” to Nigeria’s national stability and urged soldiers to remain professional and committed carrying out their duties.
“Your job here is very critical to ensure that we have peace and stability on the Plateau”, Shaibu said., emphasizing that military discipline and professionalism remain the bedrock of operational success.
Welfare and Operational Support for Troops during the visit, Shuaibu received detailed briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3 Division on the realities on the ground and welfare challenges facing personnel.
He assured that the Army Headquarters is taking steps to address these concerns and provide tactical support to troops in field.
He commissioned newly renovated accommodation and offices for soldiers at the Maxwell Khobe Contonment, a move aimed at improving the living conditions and morale of personnel deployed in the theatre.
Focus on professional Development of the Army, the army Chief urged younger soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek mentorship from senior officers, highlighting the role of leadership and structured training in building strong, capable force. He also stressed the need for constant physical fitness and mental alertness as essential components for military service.
The Plateau operation forms part of wider efforts by the Nigerian military to address rising insecurity nationwide, which includes threats from bandits, terrorists, and violent criminal networks in other regions of the country. In recent months, the federal government has reinforced its commitment to restoring peace through coordinated security operations and strategic partnerships.
