Three persons have been killed following a fresh attack by suspected gunmen on Torok Community in Rim Village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to residents, the attack occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, throwing the community into mourning as frightened residents fled for safety.
The victims were identified as Ezekiel Zakka, David Yakubu, and Dauda Habila.
A resident of the community, Albert Tok, said the assailants stormed the area and opened fire on residents before fleeing the scene.
Reacting to the incident, Berom Youth Boulders-Association (BYM) condemned the killings, describing the attack as barbaric and calling on security agencies to immediately arrest those responsible.
In a statement signed by the association’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, on behalf of the National President, Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, the group expressed condolences to the bereaved families, the people of Torok Community, and the entire Berom nation.
The association described the latest attack as another painful reminder of persistent insecurity confronting Berom communities, lamenting that innocent citizens continue by lose their lives while those responsible allegedly evade justice.
BYM urged security agencies to launch a comprehensive manhunt for the attackers and ensure they are arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The association also called on both the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to move beyond routine condemnations by taking concrete steps to strengthen security and protect vulnerable communities across Riyom Local Government Area and other parts of the state.
It further appealed to residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information, and continue to conduct themselves peacefully and within the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, the association stressed that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to life and security, pledging to continue advocating for the arrest and prosecution of the attackers and for lasting peace across Berom communities.
As of time of filing this report, the spokespersons of Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace, DSP Alfred Alabo and Captain Polycarp Oteh, had not responded to inquiries regarding the issue.
