Nigerian rap icon Jude M. I Abaga has revealed how he learned to cope with public pressure and the constant expectations attached to celebrity life.
He explained that he had to mentally prepare himself to accept being ‘broke shamed’ so he wouldn’t fall into the trap of proving a lavish lifestyle he couldn’t sustain.
Speaking with Chude podcast, the hip-hop star noted that many people – including celebrities – end up financially strained because they keep trying to meet society’s expectations.

“If you are comfortable with the fact that If somebody sees you driving a car, they wonder and they are trying to broke shame you and a 100 people try to broke shame. If you do not deal with that then you are going to continue adjusting to expectations.
“That is how you go broke. You go broke trying to just prove a point to people”, he said.
He stressed that worrying about what fans think, especially regarding material possessions, can push individual into unnecessary spending.
“One of the things that Nigerians are concerned about is their perception. And we are a country that statistically, most people do not have money. It took me time to mentally prepare myself”.
The 44-year-old rapper shared that it took him time to build the mental fortitude to remain unaffected.
According to him, many celebrities who once flaunted wealth are no longer as affluent, a lesson that shaped his decision to live in his own terms.
“I can be somewhere, people can broke-shame me, everybody can laugh, all our heroes flying private jets then, where are they now? It is not personal to you.I t is just how life is”.
The rapper added that Nigerians often priorities perceptions over reality, despite the country’s widespread financial struggles
