President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa to immediately establish a crisis notification unit to support Nigerians affected by the escalating anti-foreigner tensions in the country.
The directive was disclosed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, following discussions with her South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola.
According to the Minister, Nigerians were facing threats and emergencies were advised to promptly contact South African security agencies while also engaging the newly established crisis response channels through Nigerian missions.
She revealed that Lamola expressed reservations regarding Nigeria’s plans for its nationals, but stressed that the Federal Government could not remain passive while Nigerians were allegedly subjected to intimidation, humiliation, and unlawful killings.
South Africa has witnessed repeated outbreaks of xenophobic violence in 2008, 2015, and 2019, incidents that have repeatedly strained diplomatic relations between both countries.
