Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami has expressed his delight after Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen surpassed his long-standing goal record for the national team. Osimhen’s impressive feat has cemented his position as one of Nigeria’s all-time greats.
In Friday’s 2-0 victory over Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifier, Osimhen scored his 24th and 25th goals for Nigeria, moving him to second place on the country’s all-time scorers list. The late Rashidi Yekini still holds the top spot with 37 goals.
Odegbami, who held the record for 44 years, praised Osimhen’s achievement, saying: “Osimhen has finally overtaken me, and I think that’s good because the record has been hanging on for a very long time. I’m very happy for him, and I wish him good luck.”
The 26-year-old Galatasaray striker has been in remarkable form this season, scoring 20 goals and providing four assists in 20 Super Lig games. His impressive performance has earned him the nickname “talisman” of the Super Eagles.
Osimhen’s journey to breaking Odegbami’s record began in June 2017, when he made his Super Eagles debut in a 2-0 defeat against South Africa. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, scoring notable hat-tricks in AFCON qualifiers in 2023.
With 12 more goals needed to equal Yekini’s record, Osimhen is poised to continue making history for Nigerian football. As Odegbami noted, “He is still young and has a long way to go.”
