At a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with the rising cost of food, transportation, electricity and basic necessities, the distribution of campaign buses to political party officials in Imo State raises an important question about priorities.

Governor Hope Uzodinma recently presented 32 buses to All Progressives Congress leaders including the chairmen of the party in Imo State’s 27 local government areas, zonal chairmen and women and youth leaders. The stated purpose is grassroots political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development becomes even more politically significant following Uzodinma’s appointment as Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election. There is nothing inherently wrong with a political party preparing for an election. Political mobilisation is part of democracy. But democracy must also respond to the material conditions of the people.

Nigeria is passing through a difficult economic period. National Bureau of Statistics data show that food inflation remains particularly significant, meaning that even where headline inflation moderates, ordinary households continue to experience severe pressure in feeding their families.

Against this background, Nigerians are entitled to ask: Who paid for these buses? If they were purchased entirely from private or party funds that should be clearly stated. If public resources were involved, citizens deserve full disclosure of the cost, procurement process and justification.

Imagine what the equivalent resources could achieve if channelled into primary healthcare, rural roads, schools, youth employment, agricultural support or assistance for vulnerable families.

As 2027 approaches, politicians must remember that Nigerians cannot eat campaign slogans. Elections should not become another festival of buses, billboards and political mobilisation while citizens struggle for survival. The most persuasive campaign vehicle is not a branded bus.It is good governance.
