A Federal High Court has ordered the Nigerian Senate to reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to her legislative duties.
In its ruling, the court held that the suspension contravened Section 14(2) of the Senate’s Privileges Act, declaring her six-month suspension as excessive and unlawful.
The presiding judge emphasized that the legislative body exceeded its authority by imposing an action that undermined the principles of due process.
9News Nigeria reports that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, was suspended by the Senate in February over alleged misconduct.
However, her legal team challenged the decision, arguing that the action lacked legal backing and disenfranchised her constituents.
The court’s judgment reaffirms the constitutional rights of elected officials and calls for immediate reinstatement of the senator to resume her legislative functions.
