President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to deliver a Joint Address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for coordinating the national celebration.
Speaking at the inauguration held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja on Wednesday 3rd June 2026, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, said the President’s address to the National Assembly would be one of the key highlights of the programme approved for the commemoration.
Akume described Democracy Day as an important occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and citizens who fought for the restoration of democratic governance in the country.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose contributions remain central to Nigeria’s democratic history.
According to the SGF, the annual celebration also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
With less than two weeks to the anniversary, Akume urged members of the committee to commence work immediately to ensure a successful celebration.
He noted that this year’s activities would be conducted in line with the current national mood and the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
The approved programme of events for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration includes a World Press Conference on June 4, Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5, and a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on June 7.
Other activities include a Democracy Day Public Lecture scheduled for June 9, Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on June 10, a Presidential Broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day Gala Night later the same day.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history and honours the enduring struggle for democratic governance in the country.
