Minimum Wage : 36 Governors Set To Hold An Emergency Meeting Today

A view of some of the governors

After months of battle and labour strike, the 36 state governors of Nigeria have scheduled an emergency meeting today to discuss and find common ground on the contentious issue of the proposed new minimum wage, which has been a subject of debate between the federal government, states, and organized labour, 9News Nigeria has learnt.

The meeting follows the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision to postpone deliberations on the minimum wage memo on Tuesday.

The governors had previously rejected the federal government’s proposed minimum wage of N62,000, citing concerns that some states would need to borrow funds to implement the new wage.

However, organized labour remains resolute in its demand for a minimum wage of N250,000.

According to Halima Ahmed, Acting Director on Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), the governors will meet at 7 pm today in Abuja to discuss the matter and potentially find a way forward.
