A heated confrontation broke out in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to invite President Bola Tinubu to explain the alleged delay in funding constituency projects.
The motion, sponsored by Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency of Abia State under the Labour Party, called on the President to appear before the House to address concerns over the non-release of funds for constituency projects nationwide.
The motion received support from another lawmaker, while a separate amendment proposed that the House suspend plenary for one week until the funding issue was resolved.
The proposals triggered an intense debate, with members sharply divided over the appropriate course of action.
Yusuf Gagdi, representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency of Plateau State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), opposed the motion, arguing that the President should not be summoned over the matter.
According to Gagdi, the execution and funding of constituency projects fall within the responsibilities of the relevant ministries, departments and agencies, rather than the Presidency.
He also dismissed the suggestion to suspend legislative proceedings for one week, describing the proposal as unnecessary.
His remarks sparked strong reactions from several lawmakers, leading to shouting matches and a chaotic atmosphere in the Green Chamber.
As tensions continued to rise, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas stepped in to restore order.
The Speaker subsequently directed that the House vote on the motion to determine the position of the chamber on the contentious proposals.
