Peru’s Congress has voted to remove interim president Jose Jeri from office, barely four months after he assumed leadership of the South American country.
9news Nigeria reports that lawmakers took the decision on Tuesday, making Jeri the seventh president Peru has had in the last decade.
His removal follows allegations linked to improper appointments and suspected corrupt dealings.
Jeri, 39, had been facing accusations over the hiring of several women into government roles after meetings with him.
The claims were first made public by a local investigative television programme.
Prosecutors later stated that up to nine women may have been involved in the appointments under review.
Authorities also opened a probe to determine whether the former president used his position to influence job placements.
In addition to the hiring issue, Jeri is being investigated over an alleged private meeting with a Chinese businessman, said to have business connections with the government.
The case is centred on claims of illegal support for private interests. Jeri has denied any wrongdoing.
He came into office in October 2025 after Congress impeached his predecessor, Dina Boluarte.
Boluarte was removed following public anger over corruption claims and rising violence connected to organised crime.
At the time, Jeri was serving as head of Peru’s single-chamber parliament and was selected to complete Boluarte’s term, which is set to end in July 2026.
Under Peru’s constitution, Jeri was not allowed to contest the upcoming presidential election scheduled for April 12.
The country is preparing for a new administration to take office in July.
